Comparison

Bygmind vs. Otter.ai

Otter.ai is one of the most established meeting notetakers, with mature live transcription in the cloud. Bygmind processes everything locally on your phone. Two philosophies, compared fairly.

The honest verdict first

Otter.ai has been around since 2016, transcribes live in six languages and ships mature agents for sales and recruiting. All processing runs in the cloud on US servers, and Otter trains its own models on de-identified recordings. Bygmind takes the opposite path: transcription, speaker separation and AI run locally on your iOS or Android device, even with no connection at all. If you document English-language online meetings in a team and accept a US cloud, Otter is a proven tool. If you work in the field, transcribe sensitive conversations or need data to stay on the device, Bygmind is the better fit.

Otter.ai is the better choice if you

  • mainly want live transcription of English-language online meetings
  • need sales features like SDR or sales agents with CRM integration
  • work in a large team that has already standardized on Otter
  • are fine with cloud processing in the United States

Bygmind is the better choice if you

  • record conversations in person and on the go, not just video calls
  • work without a connection: basements, job sites, airplanes, dead zones
  • must ensure recordings never leave your device (GDPR, clients, patients)
  • do not want a tool that trains on user data
  • want to bring your own model (your own API key, Ollama, LM Studio)
  • need full-quality transcription beyond English (Bygmind ships 25 languages on-device)

The three differences that actually matter

1

Training on user data

Otter states in its own privacy policy that it trains its AI on de-identified user audio recordings. That is communicated transparently and acceptable for many use cases. With Bygmind the question never comes up: content processed locally on your device is simply not available for training.

2

Where your conversations live

Otter stores transcripts and recordings in a US cloud; EU data residency is not documented. For confidential content (clients, patients, HR conversations) that means extra review effort. Bygmind processes on the device; sync via Bygmind Cloud, your own Nextcloud or S3 is opt-in and stays your decision.

3

Languages at full quality

Otter transcribes live in six languages, with German and Chinese in beta. Bygmind transcribes 25 languages directly on the device, all as first-class citizens, including speaker separation and local summaries.

Common questions about Otter.ai and Bygmind

Otter processes data on US servers and relies on standard contractual clauses; as of June 2026 no EU data residency is documented. Add to that the training on de-identified user recordings. Whether that is sufficient for your case is a question for a privacy review. Bygmind moves processing onto your device, which removes the transfer question for core operation.

Yes. According to its own privacy policy, Otter trains its transcription models on de-identified audio recordings. Third-party LLMs do not receive the data for training, per Otter. With Bygmind, your content is never used for training; locally processed data does not leave the device.

No. Otter requires an internet connection because processing runs in the cloud. Bygmind works fully offline: recording, transcription, speaker separation and summaries all run on the device.

Otter transcribes live in six languages: English, Spanish, French, German, Japanese and Chinese, with German and Chinese in beta (as of June 2026). Bygmind supports 25 languages on-device, including full speaker separation and local summaries.

Otter: free with 300 minutes per month, Pro $8.33 per user per month billed annually (1,200 minutes), Business $19.99 (as of June 2026). Bygmind is free to use, offline mode works without an account, and premium features arrive as an optional upgrade.

Otter traditionally uses a meeting bot (OtterPilot), but now also offers botless desktop recording through its Mac and Windows apps. Bygmind records through your phone microphone, no bot at all, which also makes it suitable for conversations outside of video calls.
