Bygmind vs. Plaud
Plaud sells you a dedicated recording device plus cloud AI on a subscription. Bygmind turns your phone into an AI recorder, with processing right on the device. A fair look at both approaches.
The honest verdict first
Plaud builds excellent recording hardware: the Note Pro captures phone calls through a vibration sensor, the NotePin works as a wearable, and the platform offers 112 languages plus strong certifications including EU data residency. Transcription and AI run entirely in the cloud, however, you cannot bring your own API key, and device plus subscription quickly add up to $250 to $400 in the first year. Bygmind needs no extra hardware: your phone records, transcribes, separates speakers and summarizes, all locally and fully offline. If you want a dedicated second device on your body or your phone, Plaud is a strong pick. If your phone is already in your pocket and you want processing to stay on the device, you do not need a second gadget.
Plaud is the better choice if you
- want a dedicated recording device that works independently of your phone
- record a high volume of phone calls through the docked device
- need long-tail languages (112 languages via the cloud)
- value ready-made templates (10,000+ in the Pro plan)
- require formal certifications like ISO 27001 and SOC 2 as a precondition
Bygmind is the better choice if you
- do not want to buy, charge and carry an extra device
- want transcription and AI to run locally on the device instead of the cloud
- need complete results offline (Plaud only records offline, transcription waits for a connection)
- want to bring your own model (your own API key, Ollama, LM Studio)
- want recurring speakers recognized automatically via voice profiles
- want to start without spending: Bygmind is free, no device purchase

The three differences that actually matter
A second device, or the phone you already own
Plaud bets on dedicated hardware: buy it, charge it, pair it, carry it. That has real advantages for heavy phone-call use or as a wearable. Bygmind bets on the device already in your pocket. No second gadget, no second battery, no pairing, and the microphones in modern phones are more than good enough for conversations in a room.
Where the AI does its work
Plaud records offline, but transcription and summaries happen in the cloud, on EU servers for EU users with a no-training commitment. That is handled cleanly, yet it remains a transfer to third parties. Bygmind transcribes and summarizes right on your phone. In a basement, on a plane or in a dead zone you get the finished result, not just an audio file.
Total cost over time
With Plaud, the device purchase ($159 to $189) and the subscription (Pro at $99.99 per year for 1,200 monthly minutes) stack up. Heavy users end up on the Unlimited plan at $239.99 per year plus hardware. Bygmind starts free on the phone you already own, offline mode runs without an account, and premium features are an optional upgrade.
Common questions about Plaud and Bygmind
Yes. Plaud is built around its own hardware (Note, Note Pro, NotePin, NotePin S, $159 to $189); the app acts as a companion. Bygmind works without any extra device, directly on your iPhone or Android phone.
No. Plaud devices record and store audio offline, but transcription and AI summaries run in the cloud once a connection is available. Bygmind transcribes and summarizes on the device itself, so results are ready immediately even without a connection.
Plaud has visibly invested here: EU data residency (including Frankfurt), ISO 27001/27701, SOC 2 Type II, plus a no-training commitment in its DPA. It remains cloud processing with subprocessors such as OpenAI, Google and Microsoft, which your privacy review needs to cover. Bygmind processes on the device by default, so core operation involves no transfer at all.
Plaud commits to not using customer data for AI training by default and binds its subprocessors to zero retention. With Bygmind the question never arises for locally processed content: it does not leave your device.
You can choose between the offered cloud models (GPT, Gemini, Claude), but as of June 2026 you cannot connect your own API key or a self-hosted model; a third-party API is listed as planned on the roadmap. Bygmind supports BYO-LLM today: your own API key, Ollama or LM Studio.
Plaud: device $159 to $189, plus free with 300 minutes per month, Pro at $99.99 per year (1,200 monthly minutes) or Unlimited at $239.99 per year (as of June 2026). Bygmind: free app, no hardware, offline mode without an account, premium features as an optional upgrade.
